As the Managing Director of Khoemacau Copper Mining Company (Pty) Ltd, Johan has executive responsibility for Cupric Canyon Capital’s Africa business.
Cupric Canyon is a private copper development company. Cupric’s Botswanan subsidiary, Khoemacau Copper Mining Ltd, is developing the Starter Project at its Khoemacau Copper Silver Project in the Kalahari Copper Belt of north west Botswana. The Starter Project involves the development of a new large scale mechanised underground mine at the company’s flagship Zone 5 deposit. Khoemacau had combined mineral resources in excess of 6.5 million tonnes of copper as at December 2016.
With over 32 years’ experience in the mining industry, Johan joined the Company in May 2017 as Managing Director and Head of Africa Operations.
He is also a member of the boards of Khoemacau Copper Mining Ltd and Discovery Copper Ltd. He has served on many Boards previously and was past President of the Ghana Chamber of mines and a past President of the Association of Mine Managers of South Africa.
Prior to joining Khoemacau, Mr. Ferreira was the Regional Senior Vice President – Africa Region for Newmont. Newmont is one of the world’s leading gold producers. During his four years of service with Newmont, he had many successes. Apart from dealing with complex internal and external stakeholder relationships, infrastructure challenges, and new project development, Ghana was one of Newmont’s top performing operating divisions under Johan’s leadership.
Johan started his mining career in 1986 with Anglo American as a Learner Official. During his 26 year tenure with Anglo American/AngloGold Ashanti he progressed to the level of Senior Vice President Operations – South African Region responsible for strategic and operational management.
A highly respected mining engineer, Mr. Ferreira has a wealth of experience in the gold and uranium mining industry with particular focus on open pit (massive orebodies)-, shallow and ultra-deep narrow tabular underground mining. Mr. Ferreira also has a proven track record in mine design, project management and commissioning of mining projects.
He is a qualified and certified Professional Engineer, a member of the Engineering Council of South Africa and the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.
He holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) degree from the University of Pretoria and several other professional certifications and diplomas. He also completed various international management and executive development programmes.
