Keith Jefferis

Keith Jefferis is development macroeconomist and financial sector specialist. He is Managing Director of Econsult Botswana (Pty) Ltd, and is a former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Botswana. His current activities include work on a range of macroeconomic, financial sector and other development policy issues in Botswana and elsewhere in sub-Saharan Africa. Recent projects have involved work on the macroeconomic impact of pension reforms in Namibia; preparing financial sector development strategies for Rwanda, Lesotho, Botswana and Liberia; access to finance strategies in Botswana, Lesotho and Laos; macroeconomic management and the use of mineral resource revenues; monetary integration in African and the Caribbean; currency and exchange rate policy options for Zimbabwe; strategic planning for the central bank of Rwanda and the Committee of SADC Stock Exchanges; and the macroeconomic impact of HIV/AIDS in Botswana and Uganda. He has consulted for international organisations such as the World Bank, the African Development Bank, USAID, SADC, UNIDO, UNDP; governments and central banks in various African countries; and a variety of banks and other private sector firms in Botswana. He has served on the Committee of the Botswana Stock Exchange (2005-09); the Board of Botswana Insurance Holdings Ltd (from 2005-10); the Botswana Insurance Fund Management (BIFM) Investment Committee (2005-present); and the Boards of Sefalana Holdings and RDC Properties.

Previous appointments include: Senior Lecturer in Economics (University of Botswana, 1989-96); Deputy Director, Research Department, Bank of Botswana (1996-8); Senior Research Fellow, Botswana Institute for Development Policy Analysis (1996-7); Deputy Governor, Bank of Botswana (1999-2005), on appointment by the then President of Botswana, H.E. Festus Mogae. He is originally from the UK and started his professional career as a Fellow of the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) working as an economist in Swaziland. He has lived in Botswana since 1989 and is now a naturalised Botswana citizen.
